Taunamu Ni Viti

Behold a captivating work of art originating from the enchanting Island of Vatulele. Masi, also known as tapa cloth, is meticulously crafted from the delicate bark of the paper mulberry tree, scientifically named Broussonetia papyrifera. Through a meticulous process, the outer layer of bark is carefully removed, revealing the pristine white inner bark known as tutu.

The strips of tutu bark undergo a transformative journey as they are immersed and skillfully pounded, gradually expanding in width and gaining flexibility. Multiple strips are then thoughtfully overlapped, their joints meticulously beaten with a mallet to ensure a seamless union, resulting in the desired size and texture. The sun assumes its role as nature's collaborator, gently drying the masi until it takes on the appearance of a refined white fabric.

The artistic transformation continues as the cloth embraces the essence of indigenous creativity. Stencil designs, bearing symbolic significance, are delicately applied to the masi using natural dyes derived from mangrove sap, terracotta clay, or meticulously prepared soot. Each indigenous Fijian (Itaukei) community unveils its own distinctive motifs, representing centuries of tradition and reserved for ceremonial attire, esteemed individuals of chiefly status, and everyday wear alike.

Embrace the allure of this exquisite Fijian artwork, an exquisite addition to your home decor or a heartfelt gift for someone truly special.
